BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) -- Bend-La Pine Schools shared an update Monday with staff and families of Silver Rail Elementary School on the timeline for reopening the building and inviting families back.
The news came more than two weeks after the Oct. 15 shooting attack that killed three children and a teacher and wounded two others, and as a community survey and engagement sessions are under way to receive feedback and priorities from the public and families on what steps to take next.
With the expected completion of restoration work by next Monday, Nov. 9, the district will be ready to welcome students back on Thursday, Nov. 12, "barring any unforeseen challenges," the school district said.
The Silver Rail updates page includes details on the timeline, including when teachers and staff will return and prepare classrooms and learning spaces, and opportunities for Silver Rail families to visit campus and walk through the school prior to Nov. 12.
"Several additional safety and support measures will be in place at Silver Rail starting Nov. 12," the school district continued.
"We will have a School Resource Officer on campus through the end of the school year. We will also have more student support specialists to provide mental health care. In addition, an extra administrator and extra staff will be on site to maintain a safe and supportive learning environment during this transition.

Safety and Support
When students return to school, several additional safety and support measures will be in place at Silver Rail. We will have a School Resource Officer (SRO) on campus through the end of the school year. We will also have more student support specialists to provide mental health care. In addition, an extra administrator and extra staff will be on site to maintain a safe and supportive learning environment during this transition.
Long-term school safety and climate require ongoing dialogue with our community. Please join us this Wednesday or Thursday at our Community Engagement Sessions to learn more, ask questions, and share your input.
School Volunteers
Our primary focus during this transition is to establish calm, familiar routines and ensure every student feels safe, supported, and ready to learn. We are temporarily pausing our school volunteer program. During this initial transition period, limiting visitor access helps our staff maintain structured, predictable environments and allows students to reconnect with their teachers, support staff, and peers. We appreciate our volunteers and know how much your presence enriches our school community. We will keep you updated as our transition progresses and will share details as soon as we are ready to welcome volunteers back to campus.
Communication
Over the coming days, our teachers are focusing on reconnecting as a staff, setting up comforting classroom environments, and preparing to support your children. To give them the time they need to focus on this preparation, please contact our school principal team with any questions or needs. We will make sure you get the responses and support your family needs.
Boys and Girls Club
The Boys and Girls Club will continue free care for Silver Rail students Monday and Tuesday, Nov. 9 - Nov. 10, at its downtown location (500 NW Wall St.). If you are interested, please check availability details and registration instructions on the Silver Rail Community Information Hub.
At-Home Learning Kits
As a reminder, you may stop by the Bend-La Pine Education Center between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 3, to pick up an at-home learning kit for your student. We will also have mental health resources available during that time.
