SISTERS, Ore. -- The website WorldAtlas has named Sisters as one of the "11 Best Towns in Oregon to Retire Comfortably."
"You do not have to leave Oregon to find an easier, cheaper version of it," it said. "Social Security goes untaxed here, there is no sales tax, and once you get past Portland and the valley's bigger cities, home prices fall well under the state's roughly $500,000 median."
Here's what they had to say about Sisters:
"Tucked in Central Oregon at the foot of the Cascades, Sisters is a tiny western-themed town with an outsized arts streak. The compact downtown, all Old West storefronts, hosts a run of beloved events: the Sisters Rodeo, the Sisters Folk Festival, and the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show, billed as the largest of its kind in the world.
"The surrounding high desert and the Three Sisters peaks put hiking, fishing the Metolius River, and clear-sky stargazing all within reach.
"Being small and close to Bend has pushed home prices up, so it is not the cheapest pick, but for retirees who want sunshine, mountains, and a real arts community in a walkable package, Sisters is hard to resist."
The other 10 towns in the list include Ashland, McMinnville, Hood River, Florence, Newport, Coos Bay, Klamath Falls, Pendleton, La Grande and Baker City.
