BEND, Ore. - Bend-La Pine Schools gave an update Thursday about the ongoing return-to-learning process for Silver Rail Elementary, a week after a traumatic mass shooting. They announce a family input survey, temporary schedule adjustments, free meal distribution and expanded local child care options.
"As the district continues to evaluate the reentry process, district leaders are actively seeking input from Silver Rail Elementary families and staff while providing continuous support services to the school community," the district said.
Here's the rest of the announcement:
Family and Staff Feedback
District and school leaders are centering the input of families and staff members as they seek to navigate a return to the classroom for Silver Rail.
The district has asked all parents and guardians of Silver Rail students to participate in a return-to-learning survey that will be used to inform the process.
Alongside family outreach, the district is working directly with teachers and staff to better understand their needs and ideas for a safe, thoughtful transition back to school.
District officials will begin reviewing input from both staff and family surveys on Monday. Feedback will directly inform the district’s reentry plans.
Adjusted School Schedule and Expanded Child Care
There will be no school or parent-teacher conferences for Silver Rail Elementary next week (October 26–30). Elementary and middle school students at other BLS schools will be on a regular schedule on Monday and Tuesday, and then off the rest of the week during conferences.
To support local families during this period, the Boys & Girls Club has extended child care openings specifically for Silver Rail families through the duration of next week.
Grab-and-Go Meal Distribution
To ensure ongoing nutritional support, the Bend-La Pine Nutrition Services Department is providing free Grab-and-Go breakfast and lunch meals for Silver Rail students.
• Distribution Dates: Weekdays only, Wednesday, October 21 through Tuesday, October 27
• Pick-up Time: 10:45 a.m. – 11:45 a.m.
• Location: R.E. Jewell Elementary School, 20550 Murphy Road, Bend, OR
"We thank our families and community for their ongoing consideration, messages of support, and patience as we navigate each day," said Bend-La Pine Schools Superintendent Steve Cook. "Your voice is essential as we navigate our return to school and determine our next steps together."
