WARM SPRINGS, Ore. – Human remains discovered last month near Warm Springs Indian Health Services have been positively identified as a 13-year-old runaway who last was seen in late February, police said Friday as they asked the public for any information that could help determine what happened.

The Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs and the reservation’s police department shared the news “with heavy hearts” in a Facebook posting late Friday afternoon.

Police had announced in early March that they were searching for Tyler Kalama, 13, who had last been seen walking in the West Hills Subdivision on February 24th, They said he was believed to be a runaway who was still in the Warm Springs area.

A report on Sept. 19 of possible human remains near Indian Health Services on Kot-Num Road brought a search by tribal police and FBI that found the teen’s remains.

“The FBI and WSPD continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding Tyler’s disappearance and death,” Friday's news release stated. “Investigators are continuing to follow leads and gather information as they work to establish the facts of the case.”

“The WSPD asks anyone who may have information regarding Tyler Kalama’s disappearance, the discovery of the remains, or circumstances surrounding this case to contact the FBI or the Warm Springs Police Department,” police said, adding: “Even information that may seem insignificant could be helpful to investigators.”

“The WSPD and FBI extend their deepest condolences to Tyler’s family, friends and loved ones during this difficult time,” police added. “We recognize the profound impact this news has on those who knew and cared for Tyler, and we ask that their privacy be respected as they navigate this difficult period.”

Police said that “additional information will be released when it is appropriate and confirmed.”
