BEND, Ore. – A Warm Springs man was arrested on assault and other charges late Saturday night, accused of punching and seriously injuring a Redmond man who was left unconscious outside a downtown Bend concert venue.

Shortly before midnight Saturday, officers responded to a report of a dispute near the Midtown Ballroom on NW Greenwood Avenue at Wall Street, where rapper Too $short performed.

Callers reported a 44-year-old Redmond man had been punched and was unconscious at the scene, Bend Police Communications Manager Sheila Miller said.

Bend Fire medics transported the assault victim to St. Charles Bend with what Miller described as serious injuries.

"Responding officers encountered a chaotic scene, with a large crowd of intoxicated people and multiple disputes taking place," Miller said in a news release Monday. As a result, Bend officers requested help from Oregon State Police and the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office.

A security guard who witnessed the assault helped identify the suspect, and officers located him nearby in a parking lot in the 100 block of NW Irving Avenue. The suspect, who identified as Hamley Wilson Sam Smith, 32, "was uncooperative with officers during his arrest," Miller noted.

Sam Smith was taken to the Deschutes County Jail on suspicion of third-degree assault, first-degree disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.

Court and jail records show Sam Smith remained jailed on $10,000 bail after his arraignment Monday afternoon on the felony assault charge and the two misdemeanors before Deschutes County Circuit Judge Wells Ashby. He is due back in court in a week for arraignment on an expected grand jury indictment.

Miller said Bend Police wanted to thank the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office, Oregon State Police and Bend Fire & Rescue for their help at the scene
