BEND, Ore. -- Bend Police and other officials have called a Friday afternoon news conference to provide more details on Thursday's horrific shooting attack at Silver Rail Elementary School that left three young children and a teacher dead and two others critically injured.

The Associated Press reported Friday that "the attacker used a pump-action shotgun that was purchased by his mother," quoting an anonymous law enforcement official who was briefed on the shooting but not authorized to publicly discuss the investigation.

The Oregonian, meanwhile, quoted a law-enforcement source in reporting Friday that the teen opened fire in a special-needs classroom near the school's entrance. The source said the teen was shot by Kaylub Giamanco, 36, who has two daughters attending Silver Rail, where parents said the school was having "picture day."

Bend Police Communications Manager Sheila Miller told the Bugle she is not confirming or denying those or any other details from anonymous sources and announced a news conference is planned at 2 p.m. Friday at Bend Municipal Court.

Here is the link to that livestream:

With more information to come later, the focus of Thursday evening's emotional City Hall news conference (see video and transcript here) was on how everyone in the shocked and grieving community should deal with the tragic events, now and into the future.

Just before 1 p.m. Thursday, Deschutes County dispatchers got a 911 call from a driver who reported being shot at several times by someone with a long gun, Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz said.

Quickly, dozens of calls alerted dispatchers that the armed shooter had forced his way into the southeast Bend school “by shooting at locked doors,” Krantz said.

The first of a multitude of officers were on the scene within three minutes as the school went into lockdown.

Krantz said a community member pursued the shooter into the school and “engaged” him, the police chief said; officers found him dead of gunshot wounds.

The victims included three children, ages 5, 8 and 11, and a teacher. Two others – a 7-year-old child and a 54-year-old teacher – were taken by Bend Fire medics to St. Charles Bend with critical injuries.

As we’ve all seen way too many times after school shootings across the country over the years, the Silver Rail tragedy left the community shocked and grieving. Governor Tina Kotek ordered flags to half staff Friday to remember those lost; local and state officials offered support and resources to deal with a very hard situation.

A “service of lament” was arranged at Bend Church and an evening candlelight vigil took place at Drake Park that drew a large crowd. Mayor Melanie Kebler and Governor Kotek was among those who spoke at a tribute featuring religious leaders, prayers and songs.

Bend-La Pine Schools, COCC and OSU-Cascades have canceled their Friday classes and activities in response to the shooting.

Deschutes County 911 dispatchers got the first call around 12:59 p.m. “reporting a shot fired into a car,” Bend Police Communications Manager Sheila Miller told reporters in a media briefing around 2:30 p.m.

A minute later, all officers received an alert, and the first officers were on scene about 1:02 p.m., Miller said.

“Seconds later, we received word over the radio that the suspect in this incident was down,” she said, adding that the lone shooter was shot and killed.

Hundreds of law enforcement from every agency in Central Oregon are on the scene, Miller said, and for hours, they were in the process of “going room by room and evacuating each of the people who were in that school,” and being taken to the family reunification point at Journey Church on South Highway 97.

“This is the kind of thing we never want to see happen in Bend,” Miller said, fighting back tears. “It’s devastating, and our hearts go out to the community. And we ask our community really work together and come together at this time.”

Miller asked for patience on everyone’s part, saying, “We’ve got to be really thorough and make sure each of the building is clear.”

Miller later issued the same information in a news release, adding this statement from Bend-La Pine Schools Superintendent Steven Cook:

“We are stunned and heartbroken by this senseless tragedy. We extend our deepest sympathy to the families and to everyone affected by this violence. No words can adequately express the grief our community is experiencing. Our immediate priorities are caring for our students and staff and assisting law enforcement and emergency responders.”

Late Thursday afternoon, the school district announced: "Due to the tragedy at Silver Rail Elementary School, all classes are  are canceled tomorrow, Friday. All activities and athletic events as well."

In the wake of the shooting, a vigil was called for 7 p.m. at Drake Park and Bend Church announced a Service of Lament at 6 p.m.

Governor Tina Kotek shared on X:

Kotek's general election opponent, state Senator Christine Drazan, also posted a statement to X:

Rep. Janelle Bynum also issued a statement said she was pausing campaign activities due to the tragedy:

“They’re killing our babies. Shredding our kids with lead. Forcing us to live in fear,” said Rep. Bynum. “I feel this deep, deep, deep in my soul. Our whole community does. Our whole state does. And the whole nation should. Our babies are supposed to do arts and crafts at school, not use their desks as cover from gunfire. They’re supposed to make friends, not mourn them. This is every parent's worst fear. My heart and my prayers and everything else I got is with the families at Silver Rail Elementary. When will it end?”

Senator Ron Wyden issued the following statement:

“My heart goes out to the innocent victims of today’s horrific shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School and their loved ones now facing the awful consequences of yet another school shooting in America. The best way to honor these victims is to at long last pass common-sense gun laws that reduce the risks of more children, parents, teachers and staff forced to live in fear of similar nightmares for their schools.”

Earlier information:

An initial brief news release issued around 1:15 p.m., saying: "The Bend Police Department is currently at Silver Rail Elementary School after a report of an active shooter."

"There is a large police presence in the area. Please avoid the area. We will share more information as soon as we can," Miller added.

A few minutes later, she updated to say "the reunification location for families will be located at Journey Church, 61303 South Highway 97, near Goodwill and Dairy Queen. Students' families are asked to respond there."

Bend-La Pine Schools posted on its Facebook page: "We have a lockdown in progress at Silver Rail Elementary School. Police and emergency services are on scene."

Later, they added: "Reunification instructions will be announced soon for Silver Rail families. Please wait for instructions and avoid approaching school."

Earlier, numerous people on the Bend subreddit asked about the many sirens and law enforcement and ambulances heading to the scene.

Silver Rail Elementary, which opened in the fall of 2015, has about 450 students in kindergarten through fifth grades and about 40 staff members.

We will be tracking and have updates as quickly as we can. KTVZ is also livestreaming a report, including reports from the scene.

Thank you, Rachel. I was at my computer, planning to leave for a meeting when I heard the horrible initial report on my scanner. I hoped it would say 'TRAINING' when I looked - just as I did the Sunday evening of the East Bend Safeway shooting. Sadly, it was not. My condolences and sympathies to all saddened and shocked by the events of this day.

Ms Bynum’s statement “They’re killing our babies” is disconcerting. Who is “they”? and frankly it’s a 16 year old kid who did the shooting of other kids and we may know more as the days go on. Wyden of course wants to pass more gun laws.
