BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) – GoFundMe said Friday it has verified a fundraising page set up on behalf of Cassidy Schutz, the heroic Silver Rail Elementary School staff member who threw her cellphone at the attacker, then wrestled to get his gun away before he was fatally shot by a pursuing parent.
The fundraiser organized by Emily Curfew already as of Friday night had reached nearly $60,000 of its $70,000 goal.
It’s the 12th verified GoFundMe page added to the organization’s list of Silver Rail-related accounts that have raised more than $2 million for victims and survivors of the Oct. 15 attack that left three children and a teacher dead and another child and staff member seriously wounded.
Curfew wrote that Schutz, a “dear friend and dedicated educator … acted with profound bravery” that day.
“While we grieve deeply for the lives lost, we are profoundly grateful for Cassidy’s presence of mind and courage during those terrifying moments,” she said.
A week ago, Bend-La Pine Schools released a statement from Schutz, a certified learning specialist, who said in part: “It all happened so fast, and I wish with everything in me that we had more time. The pain of this loss I will carry with me forever.”
