NEWPORT, Ore. – A fire at a seafood processing plant in Newport Sunday morning prompted a major response and area evacuations due to the potential for a dangerous ammonia leak.
The fire at Pacific Seafood was reported shortly before 9 a.m. and closed Newport’s Bayfront, causing Level 2 and 3 evacuations and call-out of a hazardous materials team, as well as firefighters brought in from other counties to help fight the blaze, which kept burning into the night.
“The ammonia tank has been found and, thankfully, doesn’t appear to be punctured or leaking. Our team is on the ground and will remain in Newport through the duration of the incident,” State Fire Marshal Mariana Ruiz-Temple said.
“The Oregon Fire Mutual Aid System is frequently used during wildfire response; it is designed for all hazards, including hazmat. This response highlights its strength in protecting communities and providing resources to local responders.”
In an update on Facebook Sunday evening, city officials said the risk of an ammonia leak or spill had been mitigated, thanks to the work of fire crews. There also had been no reported impacts to marine life.
The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office issued level 2 and 3 evacuations for those within a mile of the facility. The city of Newport established an evacuation shelter at Sam Case Elementary at 459 NE 12th Street. Evacuees may bring their pets.
The sheriff’s office provides all evacuation information. A map of evacuations can be found on their website. People are asked to avoid the area.
